Bangladesh on Tuesday (April 28) started the final phase of using nuclear energy. Uranium was installed in the reactor of the first unit at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. Through this, Bangladesh is becoming the 33rd country in the world in the list of countries using nuclear energy.

The Ministry of Science and Technology says, this is the final stage before starting commercial electricity production.

Electricity production will start experimentally step by step. Around August-September, supply of 300 megawatts electricity to the national grid may begin.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is the largest single project in the country's history. The Atomic Energy Commission under the Ministry of Science and Technology is implementing the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.

Under this project, two units of 1,200 megawatts each are being constructed by Russia’s contractor Atomstroyexport.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Science and Technology said, nuclear fuel loading started today. Such achievement is possible only when the state thinks long-term. He said, this power plant will play a big role in ensuring the country’s energy security as well as in economic development.

Among others present were the Prime Minister’s Science and Technology Affairs Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, Director General of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) Alexey Likhachev, Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology Anwar Hossain and others.
